R. Lopez de Heredia Rioja Vina Tondonia Reserva 2003 (4.1/5)

This was quite a hot vintage with heat waves hitting vineyards from May until September. The vines recovered thanks to few rains in September. The harvest lasted one month from the end of September until the end of October.
The ViƱa Tondonia is actually a group of vineyards belonging to the bodega, located in the meander of River Ebro. Their Reserva is aged for 6 years in old american oak, racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites. In the glass, it appears ruby garnet with good tears. On the nose it's clean offering, with med+ intensity, developed notes of ripe cherries, floral accents, cola nuts, chestnut wood and a hint of vanilla. On the palate is dry, with med+ acidity, medium tannins, medium alcohol, medium body with good concentration on the mid palate and a medium+ finish.  Misses the mineral verve of fresher vintages, yet remains a great example of traditional Rioja.
Very good quality, Drink Now or in the next few years, not sure it has enough tension to keep vitality for too long. Premium Price. Tempranillo (75%), Garnacha (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (10%),  Rioja (Alta), Spain.
