Genium Celler Costers 2008

It was the year 2002.
It was the little town of Poboleda in the northern part of Priorat.
They were six families, already (directly or indirectly) involved in the vine growing business.
It was one decision. Getting together to produce Priorat fine wines able to compete at international level.

Genium Celler owns today 15ha of vineyards in three different municipalities (Poboleda, La Morera del Montsant and Torroja). Among these, 7ha are Costers featuring centenary Garnacha and Cariñena (variety that excels in the northern part of Priorat) with yields of just 300gr per plant. There are also newer plots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.Genium Celler wines are marked by authentic expressivity. They reflect well the powerful and mineral charm of Priorat. Moreover, having vineyards in three different micro-Terroirs allows them to achieve, year after year, great balance and complexity.

Genium Celler Costers 2008 (4.7/5)

It's their top wine, coming indeed from centenary Costers vineyards. The wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months and then spend another 12 months in bottle before release.

It appears deep dark, nearly impenetrable, ruby with very slow tears. On the nose it's clean offering, with med+ intensity, notes of dark fruits, cedar, garrigue and mineral, flinty and haematic accents.
On the palate is dry, with medium acidity, med+ tannins (rounded by the long ageing), high alcohol (impressively well hidden in the tightly knitted structure), full body with savoury/mineral mid-palate and succulently persistent finish. A considerable amount of residuals, left behind after decanting, gives you an idea of the genuine level of extracts of this wine.
Outstanding quality, Premium Price (but good value for money, in relative terms for Priorat), Drink Now or in the next 5-10 years. 50% Carinyena, 25% Grenache, 15% Merlot, 10% Syrah, Priorat, Spain.
