Azienda Agricola Giuseppe Filippo Barni (Brusnengo, Piedmont)

Giuseppe Filippo Barni and his wife Giovanna produce some of the most thrilling wine in the North part of Piedmont (Brusnengo, Biella). These wines are little hidden gems that deserve to be discovered with an open soul a shut mouth. These are wine for the listeners, not for the speakers. I'll try therefore to give very
Giuseppe Filippo Barni is not only a vigneron but also a painter, therefore the beautiful labels on his bottles.

BRAMATERRA 'Vigna Doss Pilun' 2006 (4.2/5)

Coming from North Piedmont, this NEbbiolo is closer to Valtellina wines than Barolo/Barbaresco ones. There is also a 30% of Croatina and Uva Rara.
It has garnet color, med+ alcohol, good acidity and med+ tannins tamed by time. Quite sapid and mineral as well. It expresses very developed notes of tar, tobacco, lather/animal, liquorice and menthol, prunes and violets, orange peel and cola nuts. Needs time in the decanter and it gets sleeker and more elegant with time in the glass. It's just at his peak or maybe going a bit over. Very good quality and good expression of a terroir that deserves more attention.

MESOLONE Coste della Sesia 2005 (4.7/5)

100% Croatina from the Mesola Terroir (Coste della Sesia). Mesolone was one of the wines loved by Veronelli. This is really an unknown treasure and one of the most longeve wines from Italy.
Medium in alcohol, good acidic backbone and huge in extracts and tannins, not for the faint-hearted!
Deep ruby, still very young notwithstanding the ten years on his shoulders. Wild berries, juniper, leather, mineral, cedar, roses/violets, cola nuts. Exceptional intensity and length. Outstanding quality at a bargain price!

CANTAGAL Vino Bianco Passito 2008 (4.7/5)

100% Erbaluce grapes collected and then air-dried for about 4 months for a passito style wine. Deep golden color with amber tints. Maple syrup, dried figs and apricots, all-butter almond croissant and vanilla hints. In the mouth is luscious yet very fresh! Great intensity and long persistence. Outstanding quality and very well priced. Delicious!
