Viré-Clessé, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon 2012 (4.5/5)

This belongs to a series of wines from the clever Maconnais operation by Dominque Lafon. He tried indeed to purchase some and in the Macon region (much cheaper than the land Côte d'Or) with the aim of making premium wines at a very fair price point. A sweet spot.

This Viré-Clessé is made from the best fraction of the old vines surrounding the Château de Viré. The resulting wine has such a balance, weight and elegance rare to find in other Macon wines and more reminiscent of "nobler" villages such as Chassagne or Puligny-Montrachet. All this joy offered at a fraction of the price!

Tasting notes:
It appears medium lemon gold with watery rim. On the nose it's clean offering, with medium intensity, notes of lemon, apple and white flower, with a mineral rigidity (chalky/oyster shells) giving a serious and restrained charm and tension. On the palate is dry, med+ refreshing acidity, med+ alcohol, medium+ body, a generous and mineral mid-palate and medium+ finish. Everything is in perfect balance. Vibrant Finesse.
Very Good quality, Drink Now but will improve, Premium Price (but outstanding value for money). Chardonnay (massal selection), Vire'-Clesse', Maconnais, Burgundy, France.
