Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva 1999 (4.4/5)

The Radici Taurasi Riserva comes from the Montemarano vineyard in Atripalda.
The old-vines Aglianico grapes are hand picked and transformed in the cellar by means of very traditional and attentive winemaking. The wine is aged in large oak casks for 30 months, and refined 42 months in bottle before release.

It is always genuinely representative of its terroir's and vintage's characteristics. However, it always manages to show unbeatable class and purity, in great as well as in lesser vintages.

Tasting Notes:

It appears medium+ garnet, with very good and slow tears.

On the nose it's clean offering, with med+ intensity, developed notes of macerated cherries, prunes, dried violet, sweet tobacco, ashes, chestnut honey, quinine and cola nuts.

On the palate is dry, with marked acidity giving the wine great vitality, silky tannins (surprisingly quite low with respect to close vintages),  medium alcohol, med+ body, great flavour intensity combined with alluring elegance. Med+ finish.

This remains a benchmark for Taurasi's Aglianico, and one of the best wines in South Italy. Prices have been also maintained reasonably stable, regardless the international success of this wine. Bravo and many thanks as a consumer!

Very good quality. The wine is probably entering its peak season but it's still so lively and expressive tat I think it can be cellared for several years more!  Premium Price (but good quality/price ratio relatively to its category), 100% Aglianico, Taurasi, Campania, Italy.
