Maramia Vino Rosso Biodinamico Sangiovese 2012 (4.6/5)

"Best biodynamic red wine of the year" in the Yearbook of the Best Italian Wines 2014 by Luca Maroni  and Gold Medal winner for Mundus Vini.

This wine shows, in my opinion, how "biodynamic" is not in contradiction with "fine wine". It also nicely demonstrates what Romagna can achieve with the purity of Sangiovese. A level of excellence in the expression of this grape that was previously believed possible only through the best Chianti's terroirs. A very nice surprise indeed.

Grapes are coming from biodynamic farming and are hand harvested, minimum intervention in the cellar (no commercial yeasts, additives, no temperature control), long post-fermentation maceration on skins (30days) and elevage (sur lie) in French oak barrels for 12 months.

Tenuta Mara is one of the most beautiful estates in Europe and deserves a visit to understand how nature (through plants, animals, insect, bacteria etc...) and man (through agriculture, winemaking, architecture, music etc...) work together in creating this alluring wine (www.tenutamara.com).

I like the sentence reported on the bottle: "Il vino e' vivo, come chi lo ama, nasce, matura e muore. Non dura in eterno. Degustatelo nel suo splendore, senza rimandare all'occasione che mai arrivera'." A sort of Carpe Diem, or Carpe Vinum in this case :-)

Tasting Notes:

It appears medium ruby garnet with good legs. On the nose it's clean offering, with med+ intensity, developed notes of red cherries and hedgerow fruits with some ripe plums sauce (don't forget 2012 was an extremely hot vintage which required paramount efforts -and prayers- in order to match phenolic ripeness with technological ripeness), earthy hints of loamy soil, baking spices and cedar, with a mineral verve. These notes are surrounded by a subtle and soft buttery (lactic) tone that is probably coming from the ageing (batonnage?) on fine lees. It may remind you some supple Burgundian example from Chambolle-Musigny (Les Amoureuses?), with an warm Italian twist.
On the palate is dry, with medium acidity, and medium (silky) tannins, medium alcohol, med+ body, great flavour intensity, complexity and sapidity. A marked liquorice note characterises the med+ finish.
Outstanding quality. Drink Now or in the next few years, Premium Price. 100% Sangiovese, San Clemente, Romagna, Italy.
