Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida 2011 (3.8/5)

The Estate of Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri extends over the two villages of Labastida Alava and San Vicente de La Sonsierra in the Rioja Alta region.

Historically, few of the best vineyards neighbouring (but not belonging to) the Estate were used to source grapes to be added to the grand vin.

In 2009 Remelluri decided to separate these grapes  ("Lindes"="Boundaries") from the Estate-grown grapes. In this way,  two new wines named  “Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida” and “Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de San Vicente” have been created.

The aim is to express the different characteristics of Labastida and San Vincente by means of two modern, yet terroir-driven, wines. Only native-yeast are used during fermentation and the wines are aged for 12 months in French oak barriques and large French oak vats.

Usually, Labastida gives wines with lower alcohol and higher acidity/tannins than that of San Vicente. This is mainly due to the cooler site and rockier soil of Labastida with respect to San Vincente.

Tasting Notes (Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida)

The 2011 vintage was particularly warm, therefore the wine is riper/bolder than usual.
It appears deep ruby with good legs. On the nose it's clean offering, with medium intensity, notes of morello cherries and plums, floral hints, liquorice root (markedly recalled on the palate).
On the palate is dry, with medium+ acidity, medium tannins, med+ alcohol, medium+ body, a bit on the warm side but still preserving some elegance. Med+ finish.
Good quality, drink now or in the next few years. High Price, good value for money. Blend of Tempranillo-Garnacha-Graciano-Vuira, Rioja Alta, Spain.
