Gulfi Nero D'Avola 'Neromaccarj' 2008 (4.5/5)

Gulfi produces a series of Nero d'Avola wines aiming to express the specific Terroir of 4 distinctive sites (or Crus) in the area of Pachino, south-eastern part of Sicily. Organic and dry-farming technique are applied in the vineyard, where the vines are densely planted and pruned with the historical head-trained bush ('alberello') system, very well suited to such hot climate.
Consultant at this estate is the vigneron-winemaker Salvo Foti, profound and down to earth expert in the Sicilian enological scene.
The estate is also recently investigating the potential of Mount Etna Crus by means of local (Nerello Mascalese) and international (Pinot Noir) cultivars.

The Maccari Vineyard, close to Pachino, is characterized by calcareous soils with presence of clay, that indeed gives firm structure to its wines. Vines are, on average, 30 years-old with a density of 7000 plants/hectare and very-low yielding. Grapes are hand-harvested and minimal intervention is adopted in the cellar.  The wines mature for 24 months in used French oak barriques and tonneaux.

Tasting Notes: The 2008 Maccarj appears deep ruby with very good tears. On the nose it's clean offering, with medium+ intensity, notes of plums and black cherries, some Mediterranean herbs, spices and cedar (oak elements are seamless integrated). There is also an haematic, mineral note.
On the palate the wine is muscular and broad-shouldered, but balanced by good acidity and good fruit extract. Tannins mellowed out with time, and the mid-palate exhibits very good concentration leading to a persistent finish. Exuberant, yet terroir-driven.
